CONTRAINDICATIONS:

The following conditions are contraindications to colon hydrotherapy:

GREY AREAS:

The following conditions are not official contraindications to colon hydrotherapy. However, if you have one of these illnesses, you must speak to the hydrotherapist before making an appointment. It is possible that you will be asked to get your doctor’s verbal approval, or even a prescription, before having a colonic. Please also speak to the hydrotherapist if you wish to bring in a child under the age of 18 for a colonic.

PRESCRIPTIONS

Whether or not a person needs a prescription from a medical doctor in order to have a colonic depends on two factors: 1) that person’s health; and 2) the type of equipment used by the colon hydrotherapist.

1. Health: If you have none of the contraindications listed above, and none of the illnesses in the grey area, you should not need a prescription for health reasons. (However, we at Family Hydrotherapy, LLC reserve the right to require a prescription or to turn away clients if we have concerns about their health.)

2. Type of Equipment Used: At Family Hydrotherapy, LLC, we use Class I medical devices, which can be used by the public without a prescription. If you are coming to our facility for a colonic (and there are no health issues), you will not need a prescription from a medical doctor in order to use our equipment.

If you are going to a different facility, you must ask what type of equipment is used. If the equipment is a Class II medical device, you will need to get a prescription from a medical doctor in order to get a colonic, regardless of your health status.

INSURANCE CLAIMS/TAX-DEFERRED SPENDING ACCOUNTS

At Family Hydrotherapy, LLC, all payments must be made by cash, check or credit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover). We do not submit claims to insurance companies.

If you wish to file a claim to have your colonic covered by insurance, or to be reimbursed by your own tax-deferred spending account, you will need a prescription from your medical doctor, and your medical doctor will have to help file the paperwork. This is because a procedure code for colonics will have to be put on the claim, and that code can only be furnished by a medical doctor. According to the International Association for Colon Hydrotherapy, if a colon hydrotherapist were to provide the procedure code to a customer, the colon hydrotherapist could be accused of diagnosing and treating disease; i.e., practicing medicine without a license.
